What the keyword search volume checker shows
The keyword search volume checker returns one row per keyword, in the order you entered them. Keywords are converted to lowercase, extra spaces are removed, and duplicates are dropped.
- Monthly volume: the average number of Google searches per month for the keyword in the country you choose.
- CPC: the average cost per click advertisers pay for the keyword in Google Ads, in US dollars.
- Competition: how competitive the keyword is among Google Ads advertisers, shown as low, medium, or high with a score from 0 to 1. It describes paid search only.
- 12-month trend: a small chart of searches for each of the last 12 months, so you can spot seasonal peaks.
A keyword shows n/a when there is no data for it in the selected country. This happens with very new, very rare, or misspelled searches.
Where the data comes from
Each new check requests keyword data for Google from the DataForSEO Labs API. Each keyword comes back with its average monthly volume, CPC, competition, and a search count for each of the last 12 months.
The checker covers Google searches in English in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and India. Volume for the same keyword can differ a lot between countries, so pick the one your audience searches from.
Search volume from any keyword tool is an estimate. Treat it as a way to compare keywords with each other and to spot seasonal patterns, and expect real traffic to vary.
How to use search volume in keyword research
Volume measures how often people search for a keyword. The clicks a page gets also depend on its ranking, the other results on the page, and features like ads and AI answers.
Check the 12-month trend before you plan content around a keyword. For a keyword that peaks in one season, publish a few months before the peak so the page has time to rank. A keyword in steady decline may not hold its current volume.
For a page that already ranks, Google Search Console shows the impressions and clicks it gets for each query. Compare those numbers with the volume here to see how much of the search demand your page reaches.
