Google may rewrite titles and descriptions, and the exact cutoff depends on the device and the search. Treat the limits here as guidelines.

Search results

How Google displays titles and descriptions

A standard Google result has three parts: the site name and URL breadcrumb, the title link, and a short text snippet. The title link usually comes from the page's title element, and the snippet often comes from the meta description.

Google can show different text for either one. It may build a title from headings or other prominent text on the page, and it often picks a snippet from the page content when that text matches the search better than the meta description does. A clear, accurate title and description make it more likely that Google uses your version.

When text is too long for the space, Google cuts it off and adds an ellipsis. The cutoff is based on how much space the text takes up on screen, so wide letters like W and M use up the limit faster than narrow ones like i and l.

Method

How the checker measures pixel width

The checker uses your browser's canvas API to measure each field in Arial, which SERP preview tools commonly use to approximate Google's result text. Titles are measured at 20px and descriptions at 14px.

  • Title: about 600px, or roughly 30 to 60 characters.
  • Description on desktop: about 920px, or roughly 70 to 160 characters.
  • Description on mobile: about 680px, so long descriptions get cut sooner.

Google does not publish these limits. They are common approximations used by SERP preview tools, and real results vary with screen size, bolded query terms, and dates or other details Google adds to the snippet.

Prioritization

Which pages to fix first

Titles and descriptions matter most on pages that already show up in search. In the Google Search Console Performance report, look for pages with a high number of impressions and a low click-through rate for their average position. Those pages are being seen and skipped.

  1. Sort pages by impressions over the last three months.
  2. Flag pages whose CTR is low compared with other pages at a similar position.
  3. Open the queries for each flagged page and check whether the title and description match what people are searching for.
  4. Rewrite, check the new version here, publish, and compare CTR after a few weeks.
Whole-site review

Run the same review across your whole site

This checker handles one page at a time. CalmSEO is an MCP server that connects Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor to your Google Search Console data, so your assistant can run this review across every page that gets impressions.

The assistant can list your pages by impressions, CTR, and average position, pull the queries each page shows up for, read the current title and meta description with a page audit, and suggest rewrites for the pages with the most impressions and the lowest CTR. Search Console tools are free on every plan, and page audits use 5 credits each.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

Is the meta description checker free?+

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. The title, description, and URL you enter are not sent to CalmSEO or any other server.

How long should a meta description be?+

Roughly 70 to 160 characters works for most pages. Google cuts descriptions by pixel width, around 920px on desktop and less on mobile, so put the most important information near the start.

How long should a title tag be?+

Roughly 30 to 60 characters, or under about 600px at 20px Arial. Titles with many wide letters or capitals can hit the limit with fewer characters.

Why does Google show a different title or description than mine?+

Google may rewrite a title when it is missing, very long, repetitive, or does not describe the page well. It also often builds the snippet from page text that better matches a specific search. A preview shows how your own text would look if Google uses it.

Why does the checker measure pixels as well as characters?+

Letters have different widths, so two titles with the same character count can take up different amounts of space. Pixel width is closer to how Google decides where to cut the text.

Can I check titles and descriptions for a whole site?+

With CalmSEO connected to Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor, your assistant can combine Search Console data with page audits to find the pages with the most impressions and lowest CTR, then review their titles and descriptions. Search Console tools are free, and each page audit uses 5 credits.
